1. Dynamic Range

What is HDR?

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a range that approximates the human perception of color and light as content is shown on a display device. A monitor which supports HDR is able to correctly show both very bright and very dark areas on the screen without sacrificing the integrity of either. With lower-range SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) monitors, brightness, contrast, and color are lost when displaying HDR content.

EIZO HDR Technology

EIZO’s ColorEdge PROMINENCE HDR reference monitors are the first to overcome the severe drawbacks of other HDR technologies available in the market, so they can be used reliably for post production work.

Auto Brightness Limiter (ABL) equipped in other HDR OLED monitors limits the monitor’s ability to display lighter scenes with tones over a specific range. This causes those light areas to appear dimmer and the color duller as a result.

CG3146 img16 ColorEdge CS2400R

Local dimming uses an area control backlight system which adjusts the brightness in sections of the screen depending on the content displayed. However, when an object on the screen falls outside of the area of the backlight that is adjusted, a “halo” effect appears, making it impossible to achieve full color accuracy in smaller details.

CG3146 img17 ColorEdge CS2400R

EIZO’s ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 achieves a true HDR visual experience without ABL or Local Dimming to ensure you always see accurate colors and brightness in every pixel.

HLG and PQ Curve

ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 supports hybrid log-gamma (HLG) and the perceptual quantization (PQ) curve for HDR video. HLG is compatible with SDR displays and is suitable for live television broadcasting. The PQ curve approximates the human visual system in terms of color and light perception, making it ideal for films, streaming, and other video content. Both functions (EOTF) were standardized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as ITU-R BT.2100. In addition, the PQ curve was standardized by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) as ST-2084.

2. Colour Management

Built-In Sensor to Automate Your Workflow

The ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 is the first HDR reference monitor in the world to be equipped with a built-in sensor which calibrates the monitor to stay color accurate. This eliminates the need for a third-party calibration device and streamlines color management so you can stay more focused on the creative process. Calibration information is saved directly to the monitor, so you do not need to recalibrate if connecting to more than one PC.

ColorNavigator 7 Color Management Software

ColorNavigator 7 is the latest calibration and quality control software for ColorEdge color management monitors. It combines all the features of EIZO’s previous color management software, ColorNavigator 6 and ColorNavigator NX, to create a new and improved solution for creatives in a range of fields. The proprietary software makes calibration simple and produces predictable results for photography, design, print, and video creation.

The SDI connections support 2SI (2 sample interleave) to ensure picture is always maintained during transmission. VPID (Video Payload ID) is also supported for SDI connections.
*2 sample interleave supported.

CG3146 img14 ColorEdge CS2400R

Flexible Connection

Furthermore, the monitor has an HDMI and DisplayPort input located conveniently on the side of the monitor for flexible connection to a range of other video devices. Four USB downstream ports and one upstream port are also equipped.

Video Compatibilities

The monitor’s HDMI and DisplayPort inputs support DCI 4K at 60p. HDMI input supports 12-bit 4:2:2 at 50/60p and DisplayPort input supports up to 10-bit 4:4:4 at 50/60p.

4. Image Display

Wide Color Gamut

The wide gamut faithfully reproduces 99% of the DCI-P3 standard used in post production for faithful reproduction of color.

CG3146 img09 ColorEdge CS2400R

10-Bit Simultaneous Display

The ColorEdge CG3146 offers 10-bit simultaneous display* from a 24-bit look-up-table (LUT) which means it can show more than one billion colors simultaneously. This is 64 times more colors than you get with 8-bit display, resulting in smooth color gradations and reduced Delta-E between two adjacent colors.

*A graphics board and software which support 10-bit output are also necessary for 10-bit display. Equipment that supports DeepColor is required for 10-bit display when connected via HDMI.

3D LUT for Accurate Color Display

A 3D LUT is included which adjusts colors individually on an RGB cubic table. The 3D LUT also improves the monitor’s additive color mixture (combination of RGB), which is a key factor in its ability to display neutral gray tones.

Stable Display Using Industry-First AI

The color and brightness of an LCD monitor can shift due to changes in ambient temperature and the temperature of the monitor itself. ColorEdge CG Series monitors are equipped with a temperature sensor for accurately measuring the temperature inside the monitor, as well as estimating the temperature of the surrounding environment. With this temperature sensing and estimation technology, the monitor adjusts in real-time so gradations, color, brightness, and other characteristics continue to be displayed accurately. Furthermore, EIZO uses AI (artificial intelligence)* in the estimation algorithm of the CG3146 so it can distinguish between various temperature changing patterns to calculate even more accurate correction.
*Patent pending.

Read more about image quality stabilization in our White Paper.

Stable Color in Just 3 Minutes

A typical monitor takes 30 minutes or more for its brightness, chromaticity, and tone characteristics to stabilize. The ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 takes a mere 3* minutes so you get reliable color display soon after turning the monitor on.
*Based on EIZO’s internal testing.

Uniformity Across the Screen

LCD monitors commonly exhibit fluctuations in brightness and chromaticity across the screen, affecting color accuracy. To counter this, ColorEdge monitors are equipped with EIZO’s patented digital uniformity equalizer (DUE) technology which corrects deviations in every tone across the screen to ensure stable display.

5. Added Functionality

Multiple Preset Color Modes

The ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 provides quick access to several broadcast-standard preset color modes from the OSD menu. The available modes are BT.2020, BT.709, DCI-P3, PQ_BT.2100, PQ_DCI-P3, HLG_BT.2100, Calibration, and SYNC_SIGNAL.

Automatic Color Settings

To ensure color settings stay consistent throughout production, the ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 includes a Sync Signal function which automatically adjusts the monitor’s settings, such as input range and input color format, according to the video signal.

Luminance Warning

The ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 includes a function that shows the areas of the image that cannot be displayed correctly at the current brightness settings. These areas are marked in yellow or magenta and can be viewed for brightnesses of 300, 500, 1000, and 4000 cd/m2.

CG3146 img12 ColorEdge CS2400R

4K Zoom

Enlarge areas of the screen to confirm small details and check focus accuracy in images using the 4K zoom function. It is quickly and easily accessible using the monitor’s front buttons.

CG3146 img02 ColorEdge CS2400R

BT.709 Out of Gamut Warning

The monitor includes a Gamut Warning preset that when selected, indicates areas of a BT.2020 image that cannot be reproduced using BT.709 by converting them to shades of gray. An additional mode called BT.709 Clipping allows the editor to view BT.2020 images within the BT.709 color space, simulating how it would look to their audience in an HDTV environment.

CG3146 img07 ColorEdge CS2400R

6. Ease-of-Use

Adjustable Front Dial

The monitor’s front bezel includes a dial for quickly and easily navigating the OSD menu or adjusting monitor settings, such as brightness.

CG3146 img01 ColorEdge CS2400R

Flicker-Free Viewing

Due to the way brightness is controlled on LED backlights, a small number of people perceive flicker on their screen which causes eye fatigue. The ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 regulates brightness to make flicker unperceivable without any drawbacks, such as compromising color stability.

Light-Shielding Hood

The monitor comes bundled with a light-shielding hood that effectively prevents glare on the screen caused by ambient lighting. The hood attaches magnetically for quick and easy setup.

Built-In Carrying Handles

Two handles on the back allow for a firm grip to carry or move the monitor.

HDR Workflow

In addition to the ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3146 HDR reference monitor, EIZO offers optional HLG and PQ curves for many of its current CG Series monitors. The optimized gamma curves render images to appear more true to how the human eye perceives the real world compared to SDR. These products will support the HDR workflow from shooting to color grading.
