Terminator: Dark Fate hit cinemas in November 2019. Skydance Media, the production company behind the film, developed the visual effects (VFX) for the film using ColorEdge monitors from EIZO. This meant that not only was consistency ensured throughout the entire production process, but it also made sure that the filmmaker’s vision was brought to life for the cinema-going audience. The ColorEdge CG319X and CG279X monitors were used for the post-production process and the ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3145 HDR reference monitor was used for the colour grading.

Skydance and its partners used thousands of visual effects, stunt work, CG characters and even whole environments rendered in CG to create Terminator: Dark Fate’s incredible climax.

Jake Maymudes, VFX Supervisor, explains: “In order to maintain accuracy between workstations and artists, we’ve relied heavily on EIZO products. The CG279X is really the work horse for us. It’s really the perfect monitor for our visual effects pipeline and when you’re on a movie of this size, it’s 100% critical that you get your colour right.”

The ColorEdge CG319X and CG279X monitors are equipped with built-in calibration sensors that continuously ensured the consistency of every set-up. “I’ve been using EIZO professionally for the last 3.5 years and I’ve become a huge fan of the CG318-4K and now the CG319X. The big issue is colour and the fact that I rely on it every day when I come to work,” says Eric Barba, VFX Supervisor.

The HDR colour grading monitor ColorEdge PROMINENCE CG3145 was used in the review suites to replicate the DCI-P3 gamut, which is used for cinema films. This meant the team knew precisely what the audience in the cinema would see, so they were able to adjust each and every detail to create the perfect result.

Tim Miller, the director of Terminator: Dark Fate, adds: “These monitors are fantastic, and the colour fidelity is amazing. [EIZO] has made everyone’s work here so much easier and we hope [they] are proud of the work that [their] monitors enable.”
